Darn the Luck: WBN 4 P.M. Headlines

facebooktwitterreddit

As you have all heard by now Kentucky lost a potentially great freshman due to a season ending knee injury. Darryl Collins hurt his knee a couple of days ago and it will require surgery. Here are some quotes about him from Joker Phillips and Morgan Newton:

“He was right on the verge of whether or not he was going to help us”-Phillips

Newton called Collins a “spectacular athlete” and said he will “still have a long career”. I hope Collins has a speedy recovery. The good news is that he will be a red shirt and he will still have four years of eligibility. He was making some serious waves in camp.

Time for your other headlines:

-Looks like Kentucky MIGHT have a shot at beating LSU in Death Valley. Maybe not, but the Bayou Bengals may be short a starting QB and linebacker. An arrest warrant has been issued for Jordan Jefferson and Josh Johns for second-degree battery, a felony in Louisiana. Both players have been suspended indefinitely and I highly doubt either will see the field this season. After all, the “allegedly” kicked an unarmed, defenseless man in the face while he was already down on the ground. This is not going to end well.

The Courier-Journal profiled wide receiver Gene McCaskill today. They call him “Mr. Reliable”. I certainly hope so after the bad news about Collins.

-I know football is less than a week away but as a Kentucky fan I am excited about basketball 365 days a year. I was extremely pumped when ESPN released the date and time for the Kentucky vs. Kansas game. It’s on November 15th at 9:00 P.M. on ESPN. This will be an early test for the Cats even though Kansas lost all of their major stars last year. The Jayhawks still the Jayhawks.

-Chris Matthews caught his first NFL touchdown for the Cleveland Browns last night during a preseason football game. The guy trying to cover him was non other than ex Wildcat and current Eagle Trevard Lindley. I hate Wildcat on Wildcat crime. Just glad to see both guys competing for spots at the next level.

-Shabazz Muhhamad has only one official visit scheduled right now and it is a visit to the University of Kentucky during Big Blue Madness. I know the consensus seems to be that he is UCLA bound because he is an “Adidas guy”, whatever the hell that means and why isn’t somebody investigating that, but nothing can turn a recruits head like this event. Shabazz, prepared to be wowed.

-In other recruits visiting the Cats, target Mitch McGrary will be visiting UK on September 5th. The only problem is that John Calipari won’t be in town due to his obligations to the Dominican team. You might want to reschedule, Mitch. You can’t get the full “Kentucky Effect” without Cal.

-Speaking of the Dominican team, they are now 0-2 in international play, losing to Brazil both times. Can you name in fantastic Brazilian players in the NBA? I can’t either. I think Ne Ne from the Nuggets is Brazilian but don’t quote me on that.

-Billy Gillispie is still screwing things up in Lubbock. Just thought you should know.

-If you want to get a look at UK targets such as Shabazz Muhammad, Perry Ellis, DeJuan Coleman and Mitch McGrary, you can check out ESPNU. The Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic will be televised at 7:00 P.M. Saturday night. The dunk contest is tonight at 6:00 P.M. Both are on ESPNU.

That was a lot of work for a Friday afternoon. Time to leave work and have a cold one to start off a busy weekend. I hope you enjoyed all of the football posts throughout the day. Paul and I are definitely the most optimistic about our football picks. Great minds think alike? Clearly.
