Is a Kentucky Wildcats offer coming for Mychal Mulder?

More from Kentucky basketball recruiting

As the Big Blue Nation waits for the college decisions of Stephen Zimmerman, Malik Newman, and Jaylen Brown, John Calipari is looking at other ways to rebuild his Kentucky Wildcats roster.  That has been through the fifth year transfer  and JUCO players route.  Mike Thornton will be visiting Lexington soon and it looks as if an offer may be in the works for four star shooting guard Mychal Mulder.

Mulder is a 6’4, 190 pound shooting guard that has played the last two seasons at Vincennes University in Indiana and ironically enough, he is coming off two straight Final Four appearances in the NJCAA Division 1 ranks.  In the recently completed season at Vincennes, Mulder averaged 15.7 points and 6.4 boards a game.  He hit 46.3% of his 3-pointers and 80.4% from the free throw line.  And he is getting some pretty good reviews from the recruiting experts.

"“Mulder is an explosive wing…Excellent transition player who is very vocal and leads,” Kendrick tells 247Sports. “At three-point range is where he is becoming dangerous.”"

For this upcoming Kentucky Wildcats, leadership will be key and sharpshooters are always in demand.  With Devin Booker gone, Kentucky needs that sharpshooter and apparently, things have been moving very quickly to get Mulder to campus.

"Vincennes assistant coach Brian Davis — a UK graduate — said Wildcats assistant Kenny Payne called first to ask about Mulder’s recruitment. When it became clear that UK would lose Aaron and Andrew Harrison and Devin Booker to the NBA Draft, Calipari got on the phone.Davis told the Herald-Leader that UK and Mulder are working out the details for a campus visit in the near future, and it’s possible a scholarship offer could be extended during that trip.“He’s very interested in Kentucky,” Davis said. “Obviously, that would be as good as there is in college basketball. And then the tradition of getting guys to the next level, and the opportunity with the Harrisons and Booker being gone — a guy at the ‘2’ might have a chance for some good playing time next year.”"

I know that a lot of Kentucky fans may be less than thrilled about adding JUCO or fifth year guys, but these are very solid guys in Thorne and Mulder that can contribute.  Let’s not forget that Mulder was a four star recruit coming out of high school and instead of sitting on the bench and waiting for his time, he has been improving his skill and is a proven leader.  And you have to love these quotes coming from Davis in the Herald Leader article.

"He’ll run through a wall for you,” he said. “He’s got no ego. Cal likes those guys that can fit in and don’t try to be all about themselves.”"

Granted, Mychal Mulder is becoming a hot property and schools like Indiana and Louisville are showing interest.  You have to think that if Kentucky offers though, he will be a Wildcat.  Now, if only we can find a walk-on or another player named “Scully”.

The truth is out there.
