Looking Ahead to the Kentucky Wildcats Football Season

Before I get into the article, I just want to apologize. Nearly all of the Kentucky Wildcats articles today will be about the basketball team. I just cannot bring myself to do it. Not because I’m mad or upset, but because I’m simply sad. Sad that the season is over, sad that this team is done as is, and sad that the undefeated record is no more. Because of this, I’m going to look ahead to a season filled with some promise. That is the 2015 Kentucky Wildcats football team. Below are three things to look for this upcoming season, including one that will bring smiles to all of your faces.

Improved Patrick Towles

This season, the offense will look a bit different. Gone is Neal Brown, now the head coach at Troy, and in is Shannon Dawson. The base of the offense will look the same, but with more emphasis on the deep ball and running. The running game will be fine, as Boom Williams, Jojo Kemp, and Mikel Horton have that clamped down. The key will be the deep balls, which is why Towles has no chance to lose the starting job. Barker is good, but doesn’t have near the arm strength Towles does. Look for is overall accuracy and decision making to improve this offseason, after his mechanics did last year. Towles is the man for the job. and he will get it done with Tim Couch like poise.

New-Look Secondary

It is no secret that the weakness of the defense last season was the secondary. They gave up too many big plays and didn’t have the talent or depth to hold their own. However, this season will be MUCH different. So much so that they might be the strength of the defense. AJ Stamp will lead the way in the secondary, and players like Darius West and Mike Edwards will come in after redshirting last season to provide some much needed (talented) depth to this position. Of course, don’t forget that the man coaching this position now is head coach Mark Stoops. With the secondary being his strength, and him being the head coach, the players here are not going to have a lot of room for error. If they don’t get it right, they may very well not play. Talent or not, this position will be MUCH improved.Bowling Time

When Mark Stoops was hired after the 2012 season, I wrote that the 2015 season would be the year. Now, we were all almost surprised with an earlier gift, as the Kentucky Wildcats ended the season one win shy of a bowl game in 2014. Look for that elusive sixth win to come in Mark Stoops third season, as he will break the four year bowl game drought. With the talent and depth he and his staff has built in the last three recruiting classes, this is the year Big Blue Nation will be able to travel for some postseason play. If it’s not, then the seat for Mark Stoops is going to start getting hot, and that is something that nobody wants.

Overall, the upcoming season will be an exciting one. Start looking forward to that Wildcats fans. Yes, the loss last night on the hardwood was tough to swallow. But they still tied the record for most wins in a single season, and 38-1 is a REALLY good season. Appreciate that and begin looking forward to the gridiron. Wildcats will ban together and Mark Stoops will redeem the Big Blue Nation before 2015 ends.
