With Tony Bennett retiring, would Virginia's Isaac McKneely consider transferring to Kentucky?
By Mark Knight
Shockwaves hit the college basketball world today as Tony Bennett announced his retirement from the Virginia Cavaliers, effective immediately. The season is about to start, and Bennett has stepped away. When a coach does this, it opens the transfer window to any player wanting to leave. Will there be any Cavaliers that want to move on?
Kentucky currently has one scholarship available, so you have to wonder if they would be interested in grabbing a Virginia player if that player announces they are entering the transfer portal. There is only one player on the roster that the stars could align with: Isaac McKneely.
I'm not just saying this because he's the best player on their team. I'm saying this because he had Kentucky in his finalists in 2021 before committing to Virginia. He had a final eight of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Purdue, Virginia, and West Virginia.
He also grew up relatively local. He played high school basketball in Poca, West Virginia, just across the border into West Virginia, less than three hours from Rupp Arena.
You know what else he is good at, shooting the deep ball. In fact, he's one of the best in the nation from behind the arch. Do you know a Coach and a program that is trying to lead the nation in threes? Kentucky.
With Kentucky having one open scholarship, wanting to lead the nation in threes, and now one of the best three-point shooters could make himself available. This could be almost too good to be true.
There is one crucial caveat, at least in my understanding of the transfer rules. He would have to sit out the first semester because it's already started. He couldn't play until league play. Which would be a negative for any of the Virginia players wanting to leave. However, it's certainly intriguing to think about.
