With SEC Media Day officially underway, Kentucky Football fans are getting their first look at head coach Will Stein on the national podium for the Wildcats. While we'll hear from the athletes later, Stein, alongside a host of other coaches from the conference, traveled down to Florida to essentially set the tone behind a microphone for their coming season.
Stein, in typical fashion, came out swinging. According to KSR, it didn't take long for Kentucky's new leading man to once again completely bypass subtlety in favor of echoing all the hopes and dreams of the Big Blue Nation.
"I didn't take the job to be closer to my family. I didn't take the job because my dad played here," Stein said, on the scene. "I took the job to win." Can we start tailgating now?
Stein really is one of us, and at the SEC media event, he even said so. "I am BBN," Stein added bluntly. "To represent the BBN and the Commonwealth is an honor."
A Diehard Commitment to the Blue and White
For a guy who played quarterback at Louisville, Stein's diehard commitment to the blue and white is really something to behold; this is especially relevant when you take a look at the lowly expectations that are widely being set for Stein and his regime.
Across the board, the bottom of the barrel has become a resting place for the 2026-27 Wildcats in the eyes of the national media. Stein's first team seems to be seen as a learning experience for all involved, more than anything else.
Of course, "all involved" doesn't stretch to a Kentucky coach that not only expects to win, but expects to win right now. And why will the Cats win, and win big in the near future? Well, according to Stein, why else?
"Because of me, to be honest. Because of me."
Will Stein's Overwhelming Confidence
You have to give it to the man, he bought into the vision before anyone else did, and if something goes south, he'll be the last to give it up. For a first time head coach, no less, these are fightin' words in the toughest conference in college football.
But if any fanbase is willing to hop on board an outrageous sentiment like that one, it's the fanbase that fills the stands at Kroger Field. Kentucky's football program is a sleeping giant of support that has been asleep for far too long.
Beyond the specifics and what is inevitably still yet to come from SEC Media Day, Stein made good on his short amount of time on stage. Publicly vaulting over the expecations of onlookers, Stein is working to build something unlike anything Kentucky Football has seen before.
And that one thing can be summarized simply: Long-lasting, nationally relevant success.
