With the fourth toughest schedule in the nation, Kentucky Football's slate only gets more grueling as the weeks go on. What starts as a date with Youngstown State at home immediately turns into back-to-back brawls with SEC powerhouses Alabama and Texas A&M. Even so, Will Stein's goal for his first season in Lexington is for the Wildcats to improve every week. That means something has to give.
Coach Stein hasn't been at all shy about his approach to media opportunities this offseason. His "because of me" quote at SEC Media Days took the internet by storm as folks both elevated Stein's confidence and dismissed him for it. Per Tristan Pharis, his latest message to the Big Blue Nation comes from a similar state of mind.
"I want them [Kentucky fans] to see a team that gets better week-to-week; truly improve," Stein began, yet again finding a way to grab fans' attention at Kentucky's Media Day. "If you can get better every single week, that's going to result in winning football."

"That shows sustainability, buy-in from the players," Stein went on. "Also a team that cuts it loose. That plays with relentless effort and for one another.”
There's nothing wrong with Stein's sentiment, but improving after a win over South Alabama before you go on the road to play South Carolina could mean little in the face of the SEC opponent you're forced to face. How much Kentucky improves between the margins may end up defining Stein's first year.
How Much Does Kentucky Have to Improve to Win Big?
Naturally, we won't know exactly where this team stands at their base until we see the Wildcats take the field on September 5. From that point on, we'll have a solid foundation to build an expectation for Stein's inaugural Cats.
With a nine-game SEC schedule calling his name, Stein will certainly have to find a way to fast-track. This is a Kentucky team capable of a few SEC upsets, but they'll have to push Stein's game-by-game philosophy to its absolute limit. This is where big, even unexpected wins become important.
How can Stein and Kentucky find a way to catch either the Crimson Tide or the Aggies off their guard at Kroger Field? Can the Wildcats march into South Carolina's home territory and snag a midseason conference road victory? It's questions like these that will reveal the most about this team's ability.
Everyone wants to see a bowl game at least, but the BBN isn't yet in a position to hold Stein to that charge. We're in a middle ground where all that can really be done is to watch, as anxiety-inducing as that may be for a fanbase fresh off a 41-0 loss to Louisville at the end of last year.
