The Mark Stoops era was defined by defense and ball control. The Will Stein era will be defined by points.
With Kentucky reportedly hiring the Oregon offensive coordinator as its next head coach, the Wildcats are about to undergo a schematic overhaul that can only be described as going from a PS1 to a PS5. Stein is one of the brightest young offensive minds in the game, fresh off leading an Oregon attack that terrorized the Big Ten.
But an elite system needs a trigger man, and right now, Kentucky’s quarterback room is in flux. That is why Stein’s very first phone call needs to be to Lexington Christian Academy product Cutter Boley.
The perfect prototype
We previously reported that Boley was "swinging the door wide open" to other programs following Stoops’ dismissal. Stein needs to shut that door immediately.
While Boley took his lumps as a redshirt freshman, tossing 12 interceptions, he possesses the exact tools Stein covets. Stein’s offense doesn't require a running quarterback; it requires a quarterback who can process information quickly and deliver the ball with precision from the pocket.
Boley has elite arm talent and natural pocket mobility. He isn't a runner by trade, but he can extend plays, traits that Stein has maximized in every quarterback he has touched.
The QB whisperer should reach out to Cutter Boley immediately
If Boley needs convincing, Stein’s résumé does the talking.
- Bo Nix: Transformed from an inconsistent passer at Auburn into a Heisman finalist and first-round draft pick.
- Dillon Gabriel: Put up video game numbers in Eugene.
- Dante Moore: Developed rapidly under Stein’s tutelage.
All three of those quarterbacks got significantly better under Stein. Boley, with his raw physical tools, could be next in line.
The interception issues from this season are fixable with the right coaching. Stein is the guy to fix them. If Kentucky wants this "PS5 offense" to load properly in Year 1, keeping the most talented arm on the roster is non-negotiable.
