The college football transfer portal has been very active for Kentucky this offseason. The Wildcats have seen 23 of their own jump into the portal, many of them already finding new homes. Kentucky has also added 12 additions to next year's roster. The portal officially closes for players to jump into on December 28th. However, there are a bunch of rules that make it confusing going forward.
The first rule is that teams that haven't played their bowl games before December 25th get an extra window for their players to jump in the portal. Each team that hasn't played yet gets 5 days after January 1 for their current roster to decide on entering the portal or not. That extra window to enter the Transfer Portal will open on January 1st and run through January 5th. The good news for Kentucky is this is only relevant for additions to the roster. They didn't get a bowl game, so once December 28th hits (tomorrow), none of the current players can enter the portal until the spring period.
The second rule is that additions can happen from portal entries past December 28th if those players are already in the portal. Kentucky could feasibly keep adding players into January but won't see any more decisions to transfer out (in this window).
What is that window? The next full transfer portal window opens on April 16th-April 25th, allowing players to enter before Summer Camp if they decide the team is not a good fit or even if they simply lost a position battle.
The only other window that opens for the transfer portal is if a head coach leaves the program by quitting, retiring, or even being fired. Thus, if the unforeseeable happens and Mark Stoops is fired or steps away on his own, Kentucky football gets its own special 30-day window for players to leave.
