Todd Golden proves he's the most annoying winner after Kentucky sweep

While BBN is busy dissecting the 71-63 loss in Nashville, there is a hard truth everyone in college basketball has to swallow: Todd Golden is one of the most irritatingly successful coaches in the sport

Fresh off a 2025 National Title and a season sweep of the Cats for only the second time in history, Golden flashed his trademark smarminess when asked about Kentucky playing them close. "In the three games that we played these guys, they haven't led for one minute," Golden noted. It’s factually true, but it just adds to the "Golden Attitude" that rubs nearly everyone outside of Gainesville the wrong way.

The king of the backhanded compliment

If you want to know why some people find him so unbearable, look at his comments on Denzel Aberdeen. After reports of things going south with negotiations with the Gators, Aberdeen left for Lexington to be one of the 10 highest-paid players in college basketball.

He doubled down later by constantly pointing to the Cats' bottom line. "They're talented, obviously—it's a $22 million roster," Golden said.

Golden framed the move as Denzel taking advantage of "the new world of college basketball and free agency," implying that it was only the financial opportunities at Kentucky that forced him to leave. He failed to mention that he did the same thing with Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee. But as they say, okay for me, not okay for thee.

It’s the type of backhanded compliment from a boss who looks at you funny when you get offended by it. I know you know someone like that.

The uphill climb and the investigation

Golden's rise at Florida hasn't been without its shadows. After learning under Bruce Pearl at Auburn, Golden became the head coach at San Francisco. He went 57-36 in 3 seasons at the helm before being hired by the Gators to replace Mike White who left for Georgia.

Golden's first year was a trip to the NIT, and his second was a first round exit in the NCAA Tournament.

In late 2024, Golden was the subject of a high-profile Title IX investigation involving allegations of sexual harassment and stalking. The investigation created a cloud over a season that otherwise looked promising.

On January 27, 2025, the University of Florida officially concluded that investigation, finding no evidence of any Title IX violations after dozens of interviews. Golden maintained his innocence throughout, noting he would consider legal options against defamation. With the legal cloud gone and an elite Florida backcourt, Golden and the Gators went on to cut down the nets in San Antonio.

Todd Golden is a great head coach

There is no doubt that Todd Golden is a great coach. In sports, greatness usually overrides personality. But as long as he continues to drop snarky jabs while sweeping the Cats, he will remain the most annoying winner in the game. But a winner he will remain.
