Mark Pope just sent his first ever first-round draft pick to the NBA last night in the form of perhaps the biggest "what if?" in recent Kentucky Basketball memory: Jayden Quaintance is a San Antonio Spur, and it would be an understatement to say that some folks simply aren't sold.
After playing just four games in the blue and white as a result of lingering knee problems from the torn ACL he sustained as a freshman with Arizona State, Quaintance's draft stock undoubtedly suffered due to similarly lingering worries. Yet, the Spurs were more than confident in the selection at No. 20.
In a clip from Spurs Reported Hector Ledesma on X, San Antonio general manager Brian Wright broke down the process that went into drafting the high-risk, high-reward prospect that is JQ.
In short, San Antonio knows what they're getting themselves into and are ready to dedicate the needed time to get Quaintance where he needs to be.
"We do our homework...got a great medical team that's very thorough in their analysis, process..spent time with his representatives..."

"We do our homework, and we've got a great medical team that's very thorough in their analysis and process," Wright began confidently. "We've spent time with his representatives going through where he is in his rehabilitation process and what the options are."
On the possibility of Quaintance enduring another procedure to fully clean up the edges around his knee injury, Wright was similarly sure, saying: ""If that is the plan, we'll do that..."
The Spurs Will Wait on Quaintance
To that end, Quaintance couldn't have asked for a better landing spot on the next level. Whether or not he ends up going the route of another operation, he needed a franchise that was willing to grant him the very thing Kentucky simply couldn't: Time, and as much of it as he needs.
Lucky for JQ, the Victor Wembanyama-led Spurs had things mostly under control prior to his arrival. In spite of a still-stinging 4-1 loss to the New York Knicks in this year's NBA Finals, San Antonio is the envy of just about every other rebuild around the league.
With pieces like Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle set to lead the team for years, alongside Wemby, Quaintance won't be expected to click into any sort of demanding role in his first season. Instead, the generational defensive prospect will be placed on the back-burner for as long as it takes the Spurs to see what they've really got in him when he's at his best.
His best, of course, includes a fully healthy knee. Some players never get the chance to realize their potential in that way, but clearly, San Antonio believes the best is still ahead for JQ.
From a big blue perspective, I'm just glad our guy will get a real chance to prove himself in the NBA. We'll always mourn what could have been for this one-of-one prospect in Lexington.
