There is always so much talk of the SEC being the football conference with a few good basketball schools mixed in. The Big East and the ACC, among others, often compete for the crown of the top conference in basketball. That has all changed this year, the SEC has the early season crown, and there's no conference that can take it from its head.
The SEC has started the season 143-20 in non-conference games; they only have one school with three losses or more (South Carolina). There are three undefeated teams and seven teams with only one loss; the rest all have two losses. Nine of the SEC schools are ranked (as of this writing), three are in the top five, and five are in the top 10.
If you dig into the NET rankings, ten teams are in the top 30, which is far more than any other conference. In fact, no other conference comes close to any of these stats. Here's a look at the record of quad-one wins among conferences:

Big 12:

ACC:

What stands out?😳
Did you read that right? The SEC has a .609 win rate against quad-one opponents. If you don't know what quad-one opponents are, it's the best of the best in all of college basketball. It's a ranking of all the top programs.
The SEC is 143-20 (.877) in non-conference play with 17 wins over ranked opponents this season.

Many basketball analysts and experts are already starting to ask how many SEC teams make the tournament this year. Could it be as high as 16? Is 14 more realistic? Both may be too high because of how the SEC is going to eat its own during conference play, but a 12-team SEC bid may be legitimate.
Not only is the @SEC outrageously good this season, but the fact that there are no more @pac12 NCAA bids at the moment means that, at this point, 14 of 16 teams will be serious bid contenders. Highest @kenpomeroy ranking since ‘04 @theACC.

I'm calling my shot now: Three months from now, the SEC is going to set a record and send 12 teams to the NCAA Tournament. The league is 143-20 this season, which is downright outrageous. pic.twitter.com/wDzWhEMVbe

The SEC is on an insane run as the SEC conference schedule is set to begin in the next couple of weeks. It will be a tough test for any program in the SEC. There isn't an easy team in the conference; even South Carolina, who is the lowest KenPom team, is still ranked 68th in the country. This means that on any given week, they also could cause damage against another SEC team looking to cruise through them. It will be a bloodbath in the SEC this season, and Kentucky will need to be ready for the challenge.
SEC opens today +19.89 overall as a conference on KenPom (avg Rating for a team to go .500 in league play).

If it holds, that will be the highest conference rating of any league since the 2004 ACC.
