The one thing all Kentucky basketball fans agree must be regifted before 2025

For Kentucky basketball fans, the holiday season brings family, tradition, and of course, Wildcat hoops. But if there’s one gift the Big Blue Nation would gladly regift, it’s the abundance of games relegated to ESPN+ this season.

In an era where watching a basketball game should be as easy as flipping on the TV, Kentucky fans have found themselves digging through app stores, signing up for extra subscriptions, and dealing with clunky streaming setups just to catch their beloved Cats in action. And for what? Subpar production quality that often leaves fans yearning for the good old days of traditional broadcasts.

I’m not paying to watch a blurry feed with commentary that sounds like it’s coming from a tin can could be heard all around Lexington more than once, I am sure. Instead, many opted for a classic solution: watching the game on the radio with Tom Leach. His smooth play-by-play, paired with Goose's analysis, has long been a cherished part of Kentucky basketball culture. And you know you are from Kentucky when you say you watched it on the radio.

The frustration stems from more than just inconvenience—it’s about respect. Kentucky basketball is a marquee program, and fans expect marquee treatment. Yet, too often, games against mid-major opponents are tucked away on ESPN+, leaving fans feeling like they’re unwrapping a lump of coal instead of the golden gift of prime-time coverage.

The irony? Even with modern streaming options, many fans find the experience of listening to Leach far more enjoyable. There’s a nostalgic magic to hearing the game unfold in vivid detail without the hassle of buffering or subscription pop-ups and that annoying ESPN logo that is there when they couldn't sell ads.

As fans gather around their trees this Christmas, their wish is clear: fewer ESPN+ games and more time in the national spotlight, even the SEC Network would be okay. Kentucky basketball is a tradition, not a treasure hunt through subscription services. Santa, are you listening? Bring the Cats back to TV next year, where they belong!
