The CBS Sports Classic has become a yearly tradition for the network in which they put the same four teams together: North Carolina, Ohio State, Kentucky, and UCLA. The matchups and venues change yearly but the same teams will consistently play against each other. Kentucky has a weird history with this event.
The strange part of this event comes from the eye test. Without cheating, if you asked a random basketball fan which teams of these four are the best year to year. You might get Kentucky and North Carolina (especially under Roy Williams) as the premier teams, with UCLA up in the mix, depending on the year. Ohio State has had moments but is not a blue-blood basketball program.
Therefore, if you had to guess the records of how Kentucky stacks up against these teams, you'd be surprised to find that the only team against which they don't have a win in the CBS Sports Classic is Ohio State. They have beaten the Buckeyes in other places, events, and matchups but never in the CBS Sports Classic. You can read more about that history here. They also have a losing record to the UCLA Bruins at 1-2. It's only the Tar Heels that Kentucky seems to beat consistently in this event, with a record of 4-1. Strange.
The other weird phenomenon pulled together by a Kentucky fan on Twitter is that the Wildcats haven't won both the CBS Sports Classic and their other yearly event, the Champions Classic, in the same year since 2016. If they win one, they often lose the other. You can see a breakdown of all this below:
If you don't remember, Kentucky has already won the Champions Classic this year when they beat the sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils. This doesn't mean that destiny has pitted them to lose against Ohio State it actually is time for that streak to be over. Kentucky is due for another 2016 and 2014 year, where they win them both.
