The transfer portal in college football officially opened today, and it's been a busy day across all of college. Kentucky is no exception; in fact, they may be one of the busier teams as they now have 19 players to officially enter the portal. The latest edition is from one of the quarterbacks, Gavin Wimsatt.
This should come as no surprise to any Kentucky fan, as Wimsatt was passed on the depth chart for Cutter Boley to end the season. Wimsatt was used in creative packages to start the season, often as a runner with the threat to throw. He struggled when he had to take over for Brock Vandagriff and would often prescribe his throws, leading to all sorts of problems.
After Vandagriff was injured, Wimsatt stayed as the backup quarterback and true freshman Cutter Boley became the starter, bypassing Wimsatt. Fans knew then that Wimsatt was going to be looking for a new college team when the transfer portal opened. It was more surprising that it took until the official opening of the transfer portal for Wimsatt to make the decision public.
Wimsatt came to Kentucky via the transfer portal last season, leaving Rutgers with two years left to play. He was a star at the high school level for Owensboro in Kentucky. He was high on the list for the Wildcats the first time. Kentucky fans anticipated him returning home to play for his in-state school.
There was some hope that offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan would find ways to utilize his mobility and offensive play-making skills. There was even hope that Hamdan could develop Wimsatt, especially with all the physical tools the quarterback displays. That was never the case, and he's now off to his third school.
Kentucky continues to bleed players into the portal and has yet to add any. Make sure you keep track of all the additions and subtractions in the link below.
