When evaluating the Transfer Portal, a player's statistics only tell half the story. The true test of a prospect's ceiling is how they perform when the lights are brightest against elite competition.
For VCU transfer Terrence Hill Jr., that test has already been passed with flying colors.
The Kentucky coaching staff is currently navigating an abbreviated, highly chaotic transfer portal window. They are relying heavily on virtual meetings and a new front office software to set their recruiting board. As Mark Pope looks for a proven, fearless scorer to anchor his backcourt, he has officially entered the sweepstakes for the A-10's most lethal offensive weapon.
Terrence Hill Jr. is the ultimate resume builder
Hill’s sophomore campaign at VCU was nothing short of brilliant. The dynamic guard averaged 15 points, two assists, and two rebounds a night, sweeping both the A-10's Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Player awards.
But it was his explosive scoring ability that has him poised to become a portal darling. Hill eclipsed the 20-point mark seven different times last season, completely cementing his reputation as he dropped 34 points to lead VCU to a massive March Madness upset victory over North Carolina.
That kind of scoring punch was missed last season. Yes, Otega could get hot, but his scoring nights were mostly off plays he created. He wasn't a great shot maker when playing off the ball. Hill is.
A high-volume sniper
Beyond the highlight-reel performances, Hill brings a highly specific, mathematically proven skill set that Mark Pope needs: high-volume efficiency.
Kentucky's perimeter shooting was a liability last season, with the offense routinely bogging down due to a lack of floor spacing. Hill is the ultimate antidote to that problem. He is not hesitant to let it fly. Of his 369 total field goal attempts last year, 219 of them came from 3-point range. Despite that incredibly high volume, he still connected at a 37 percent clip. That's pretty good for a guy shooting that much.
This is a player who can change the offense by himself.
A 20-team dogfight
Unsurprisingly, a guard with Hill's resume is not going to come to Kentucky without a fight. The battle for his commitment is shaping up to be one of the most intense dogfights of the offseason.
Reports indicate that Hill is already fielding interest from over 20 programs. Pope and the Wildcats are currently battling Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Kansas, Baylor, and UCLA, among others.
Mark Pope has the pitch and the platform, but he will have to out-recruit half the country to bring the UNC slayer to Rupp Arena.
