Following a heartbreaking Sweet 16 loss to Texas, Teonni Key sent an emotional message directly to Big Blue Nation about the new foundation of Kentucky basketball and what it means to be a Wildcat.
The scoreboard inside the arena painted a brutal picture of a Sweet 16 blowout; it was never really close, 76-54. But inside the Kentucky locker room and at the postgame press conference, the tears flowed.
It wasn't just about losing a basketball game to Texas. They were about having to say goodbye to a group that completely resurrected the pride of the program.
The Wildcats ran into a Texas team that was "on another planet," according to Kenny Brooks. Guard Tonie Morgan admitted the reality of the matchup right away, noting that Texas brought a suffocating level of early pressure that caused the game to get away from them in the opening minutes.
But as the dust settled on the season, the players chose to focus on the incredible culture they built in Lexington. And what's next for a program that Key said had just shown its "floor."
Staying together through massive adversity
This Kentucky team fought injuries and turnovers all season long. They faced immense hurdles and roster adjustments throughout the year that saw them climb to the top 10 in the country. But the defining characteristic of this squad was their unbreakable locker room.
Amelia Hassett pointed directly to that bond when reflecting on the year, noting that despite the adversity, the team simply stayed together and had fun playing with one another. Teonni Key echoed that exact sentiment, explaining that the ultimate goal on Friday was just to fight for the girl standing next to them.
"Our biggest thing we were talking about is just staying together," Key said. "We made it to the Sweet 16... we stayed together through all the ups and downs of the season."
This is just the floor for the Wildcats
The pain of the season ending is always sharpest for the seniors who are taking off the jersey for the final time.
Key has been an instrumental part of this roster, and she did not hold back her emotions when talking about what it means to be a part of the Big Blue Nation. The senior held back tears as she delivered a powerful quote that should have every Kentucky fan incredibly fired up for the future of the program.
"It's such a good group, everybody, we really care about each other. It is going to be hard to say bye," Key explained. "The foundation we were able to lay in Kentucky... It really does mean a lot to be a Wildcat. This is just the floor."
That pride that she took in the jersey, and being one of the players to come in and set the bar for women's sports in Kentucky is huge. It had been a decade since we have seen a Sweet 16. We saw them play with some of the best teams in the country. Unfortunately, they came up short. But Key is a part of a program wide turnaround.
3 McDonald's All-American's coming in, Clara Strack coming back, and a team looking to build to something special.
If a Sweet 16 appearance and a top-tier national ranking are simply the floor for the Kenny Brooks era, the rest of the SEC is in massive trouble.
