Shining light on Tennessee's 'dark mode': Kentucky’s all-white response
By Mark Knight
The Kentucky Wildcats need to find a way to light up the dark in their rivalry contest against the Tennessee Volunteers. Any sort of spark of motivation or energy or something. They have lost three games in a row and are trying not to make it four in a row against the seventh-ranked team in the nation, Tennessee.
How can they shine a light in the dark? Why not try with the uniforms? Tennessee announced earlier this week that they would go with a blackout look and wear all-black uniforms with orange accents, calling it "dark mode" in a very venom-style trailer to announce it.
Kentucky today announced that they will counter the "dark-mode'" with the all-white look with a chrome helmet to round out the look. Here's the announcement:
It's a very intentional marketing move, as Kentucky is fighting for momentum. It is smart on two fronts. One is that it counters the black look with white. Or, if you like to use the imagery of dark and light if Tennessee is going into the darkness, Kentucky will go into the light. Those chrome helmets alone will reflect light. Do you know what penetrates darkness? Light. There's that intentional marketing idea happening for sure. But there's also another reason.
Chrome helmets, white jerseys, white pants will be the game day outfit against Tennessee.
The last time Kentucky wore the all-white look was on the road against Ole Miss. Sure, they didn't have chrome helmets then, but they had white jerseys, pants, and helmets. They called them the icy whites.
At the end of the day, the uniform doesn't matter; it's all about the players in the uniforms. However, this team has the talent, and they proved it against both Georgia and Ole Miss. Can this be the spark they need to find that extra boost of motivation to beat the Volunteers?
