As if facing Texas on the road wasn’t tough enough, Kentucky will do so tonight without two of its key backcourt contributors. Lamont Butler and Jaxson Robinson have both been ruled out, leaving the Wildcats scrambling to adjust their rotation.
Butler, who recently returned from a shoulder injury, re-aggravated it late against Tennessee and will now sit out. Robinson, dealing with a lingering wrist issue, tried to push through the pain against South Carolina but was OUT against Tennessee and was sporting a wrist brace. To make matters worse, Kerr Kriisa remains sidelined with a foot injury.
With Kentucky’s guard depth dwindling, the Wildcats will rely on a mix of Travis Perry, Otega Oweh, Collin Chandler, Trent Noah, and even Amari Williams to handle the ball. Oweh, Kentucky’s leading scorer at 15.9 PPG, will be tasked with an increased offensive workload, while Perry and Chandler could see extended minutes in the backcourt.
Texas Also Facing Injury Concerns
The Longhorns aren’t exactly at full strength, either. Chendall Weaver has been ruled out, while standout forward Arthur Kaluma (14.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG) is listed as doubtful. Kaluma’s absence would be a significant blow, as he’s Texas’ second-leading scorer and a key piece of their frontcourt. Meanwhile, freshman Devon Pryor is probable for the matchup.
What It Means for Tonight’s Game
With both teams missing key pieces, this game could turn into a battle of adjustments. Kentucky will need its remaining guards to step up, particularly in terms of ball security and perimeter defense. The Cats can not afford to be sloopy with the ball and let Texas get momentum in the open court. Without Butler, the team loses its best on-ball defender, while Robinson’s absence removes a reliable three-point threat and 3 level scorer.
On the flip side, if Kaluma sits for Texas, Kentucky’s frontcourt may have an easier time controlling the paint. The Wildcats’ Amari Williams (10.2 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 3.0 APG) could be a difference-maker, especially if Texas struggles with depth inside.
Tip-Off and How to Watch
