SEC Power Rankings after Week 13: Chaos week causes Kentucky to fall again
By Mark Knight
As Kentucky continues to falter throughout this season, it's frustrating to continue putting these together as the Wildcats have slowly descended to the bottom and have gotten stuck there. They truly are not a good SEC team this year, and their perpetual play has proved it. The frustrating part of it all is that they could be. It seems as if they have chances to show strong performance but then shoot themselves in the foot over and over.
Last week rank: 1
It was not an impressive win, but a win none the less. The SEC is messing so many of its own teams up that Texas needs to keep surviving and advancing, which is what they did against Kentucky.
Last week rank: 3
It was a weird game for Georgia. Their defense looked pretty miserable for most of the game, especially against the run, but they won, and that's what matters.
Last week rank: 5
A shutout is a big deal, even if it's against a team like UTEP. The Volunteers look very beatable, but they are in a great position heading into the final week. Vanderbilt is looking to upset their playoff aspirations in the final game.
Last week rank: 7
There's a weird scenario in which the 9-3 Gamecocks have a case to be made for the College Football Playoffs. It's wild, but they continue to hang around in the top echelon of the SEC. They have a tough matchup against #17 Clemson this week.
Last week rank: 4
The 4OT game against Auburn may be the SEC game of the year and it came down to a drop by the Aggies to seal the upset for the Tigers. It was a wild one, and maybe even a flukey won. They dropped but not by as far as maybe they should.
Last week rank: 9
The Gators look like a vastly different team than the one that started the year. Maybe it's freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, or maybe it's simply that the team needed part of the season to get there. Either way, they are an impressive team in the SEC right now, and no one wants to face them.
Last week rank: 2
Ole Miss has been all over these power rankings, seeming to ride a rollercoaster of big wins and big losses. Florida's loss may have taken away their chance to make the College Football Playoffs.
Last week rank: 11
LSU needed this win, as if the crops needed the rain in the middle of July. The program is reeling after a tough couple of weeks both on the field and in the recruiting world.
Last week rank: 10
Beating Mississippi State is not that impressive, but as I've been saying throughout these power rankings, a win is a win.
Last week rank: 6
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Oklahoma is not a good football team this year, and yet Alabama looked lost on offense against them all game. The Crimson Tide are not what they used to be, and yet, somehow, we will hear narratives all week about how they should still be included in the playoffs.
Last week rank: 12
The Razorbacks are a middle-tier SEC team. They can win and lose in an equal share, which is maybe why they are 3-4 in the SEC. They end the year ready to take down rival Missouri.
Last week rank: 13
Fun and gutsy win for the flailing Tigers. No one really saw this one coming, and they will look to keep that momentum going in the Iron Bowl to knock Alabama even one more notch.
Last week rank: 15
I didn't think the Sooners had another win in them and yet they out-played the Crimson Tide all over the field. It was impressive, and maybe some hope for Sooners fans.
Last week rank: 8
Vanderbilt hasn't been that great since its win over Alabama, and that win looks less impressive now that others have done it.
Last week rank: 14
Kentucky is the most talented bad team in the SEC. They can seemingly hang tough with Texas while also shooting themselves in the foot. They are a poorly coached team with discipline issues, and it's exhausting to watch.
Last week rank: 16
The one constant in the SEC this year is the Bulldogs' position at the bottom. They will probably be winless in the SEC this year unless they can pull off a miracle against Ole Miss.
