The rumor mill has been buzzing with the possibility of hometown hero Dane Key returning to Lexington, but Ryan Lemond, the beloved KSR radio personality and close family friend of the Key family (Dane's god father), wasted no time putting the chatter to rest. When asked about the internet speculation, Lemond was direct: “That’s not even on the table.”
Key, who starred at Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington before committing to play for the Wildcats, has had a solid college career at Kentucky. Across three seasons, the 6’2” wide receiver has tallied 126 receptions for 1,870 yards and 14 touchdowns, with a career-long catch of 58 yards. His ability to stretch the field and come up with clutch plays made him a fan favorite at Kroger Field. His catch radius is massive, and despite some drops, he has also caught a lot of contested balls.
However, Key’s 2024 campaign wasn’t quite the breakout many expected. While he managed 47 receptions for 715 yards, his touchdown production dipped to just two scores, leaving fans wondering if there’s still another gear to his game. And from him entering the portal, that is probably what he thought as well.
The rumors of a return to Lexington seem to stem from fans’ optimism and a desire to see Key flourish under a revamped Wildcats offense. Mark Stoops has made significant moves this offseason, bringing in players like quarterback Zach Calzada and an entire new line, and perhaps fans are hoping Key could be the next domino to fall.
Despite Lemond’s firm denial, the idea of Key donning Kentucky blue once again is a tantalizing one for Big Blue Nation. A homegrown star playing for his hometown team always brings a unique energy to the program. Key’s connection to the city and its fans remains undeniable, even if his next chapter seems destined to unfold elsewhere.
For now, Kentucky fans can only hope the chatter sparks new possibilities down the line. But if Ryan Lemond’s words are to be believed, Dane Key’s return to Lexington is nothing more than a Christmas wish from bbn.
