WATCH: Dane Key explodes in the first half against the Ohio Bobcats
By Mark Knight
The Kentucky Wildcats offense this season has been mostly lackluster. They went nine quarters without a touchdown before finally breaking through during their game against Ohio in the second quarter with a Demie Sumo-Karngbaye touchdown run. He later would add a second touchdown during the first half.
With two touchdowns in a game, you would think that Sumo-Karngbaye was the star of the first half, but it has actually been wide receiver Dane Key who has exploded onto the scene and made a case to be WR1. In the first half, he had four receptions for 109 yards. He had multiple receptions that were explosive gains and led to those Sumo-Karngbaye touchdowns.
The first huge play came on a third-and-13, and quarterback Brock Vandagriff was scrambling to escape pressure. He threw it up towards his receivers, hoping they would make a play. It was truly a scramble-drill reception.
The second explosive catch was on a 4th and 7 call in the same quarter. Initially, Mark Stoops marched the field goal unit out there to try a 56-yard field goal. He called timeout before that play was to finish (though Raynor had an excellent practice kick after the time-out was called, and he made it). Stoops then marched his offense back out there and set up this play for Key:
This offense needed some firepower from the receivers. The offense unit (almost entirely) has been underwhelming, especially the passing attack. Part of what was required was a deep-play receiver who could create separation in coverage. Key has shown that ability with these two huge plays and the other two receptions he also had in the first half.
The second half will continue to add to Key's story, and as the season continues, we will need to watch how Vandagriff and Key continue to develop chemistry.
