SEC Power Rankings Week 4: Where does Kentucky land after an impressive victory against Ohio?
By Mark Knight
Week 5 is approaching fast, and there are fives this week that feature an SEC vs. SEC matchup, which pushes us truly into SEC play. This will be the week where the rankings begin to shift the most. That said, there was still plenty of movement in week 4, especially after the first four. Where does Kentucky appear in the SEC power rankings after dominating Ohio and ahead of their game against Ole Miss? Let's dive in.
Texas had zero problems against UL Monroe this week. It was an absolute dismantling in all aspects of the game, and there's no reason to move the Longhorns off the top spot. They find themselves as the best team in the nation and the best team in the SEC going into week five. They get an easy entry into SEC play by taking on the lowest-ranked SEC team in the power rankings (spoilers, sorry).
Georgia took the week off to lick their wounds after barely escaping with a win against Kentucky. An overturned pick-six is the only thing between a win and a loss in that game. They've had a week to prepare for Alabama as they look to get their second SEC win. The problem is that the Crimson Tide also has a week to prepare, and that game will determine a lot in the SEC this season.
I debated moving the Volunteers up to number two after their impressive performance against Oklahoma but I couldn't get myself to do it (for obvious reasons, GO CATS!). However, under Josh Heupel, —, they truly look like a well-rounded and well-coached team under Josh Heupel.
The Rebels have destroyed every opponent in their schedule, but the question is, were their opponents any good? Even Ole Miss Head Coach Lane Kiffin mentioned in his press conference that their opponents didn't prepare them for SEC play. This may be the best time for Kentucky to knock them off before they settle into the SEC while they think they are all high and mighty.
Alabama had a bye this week, and it has nothing to do with its ranking. It will stay in the same spot, but either Georgia or Alabama will drop next week. We will see which coach prepared their team better to win this pivotal SEC game.
I'm still not sure what to make of LSU; they have had wild swings in their games. At times, they have looked unstoppable, and other times, they have looked miserable. Besides their season-opening loss to USC, they have been able to pull out wins in every other game. This week, beating the other LA school UCLA. They moved up a few spots because of that win.
Missouri barely took care of business against Vanderbilt. It came down to a couple of plays, and for a team that wants to be a top-10 team in the nation, it wasn't pretty. That's the SEC for you, though. Even the low-lying fruit can find a way to pull off a big upset. At the end of the day, Tigers fans can say that a win is a win.
The loss hurts their SEC chances and drops them in the power rankings. They still look like one of the better teams in the SEC, but not one of the absolute best. Tennessee may not have dominated them, but they won without much drama.
A weak opponent this week and a very lopsided win, but with their only loss being to LSU, they seem to be one of the teams that could surprise us in the SEC this year. I wouldn't be shocked to see them knock off one of the top teams later this year. They get a bye this week to prepare for an absolute juggernaut of a schedule where they will play Ole Miss, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M all in a row.
I always want to reward SEC wins, as they are the hardest to consistently achieve. A big win against Auburn propels the Razorbacks up in the power rankings and sets them up for a solid start to the SEC schedule. Arkansas has a chance to knock Texas A&M out of the college football rankings with a win this week and maybe even propel them into it.
It was not impressive, but they pulled it off. The Aggies need to clear the cobwebs if they hope to make some noise in the SEC this year. Barely beating Bowling Green does not help them prepare for Arkansas this week.
The Wildcats moved ahead of many of the below-average teams in the SEC with a dominant performance over Ohio. While they may be 0-2 in SEC play, they certainly look like a team that could cause chaos. Two weeks ago, they had Georgia on the ropes and only lost because of an overturned pick-six call and a very conservative game plan at the end of the contest.
Florida has not been good this year, and Billy Napier may be fired in the coming weeks, but they were able to win and win big against Miss State, and that sent them into their BYE week with a little momentum.
No one expected much from Vanderbilt, and they almost pulled off a big upset against Missouri. This would have been a fun win and a chaotic starting game for the SEC. Vanderbilt may not be as bad as we all realize and could steal some wins this year.
Auburn looks lost, and they are making a lot of headlines off the field as their head coach, Hugh Freeze, creates enemies of alumni and burns bridges with recruits. It's weird times down at Auburn, and the off-field nonsense is carrying over into on-field performance.
What can we say? They simply don't look like a team that will win many games. It's a team destined for many losses this year in the SEC. Until they play UMASS in November, I'm not sure there is another win on their schedule. It's going to be a long season for Bulldogs fans.
