The Wildcats almost pulled off an impressive upset of the #1 team in the country the Georgia Bulldogs. They were 22-point underdogs before the game even started and only lost by 1 point and yet many Kentucky fans feel a keen sense of "What could have been?!" That being said, there were a lot of good things to be taken away from this game. The game wasn't perfect for the Wildcats and neither are the scores.
1. Offense Overall : C
It's hard to give the offense a higher grade than a C, simply because they never scored anything more than a field goal. It was safe and steady. It kept them in the game but it never allowed them to run away with the game. In fact, one of my worries is that this offense hasn't scored touchdown in two consecutive games. Not ideal.
2. Passing Game: D+
It worked well enough but it was very underwhelming. In fact, you could make a case that the last drive of the game was lost because they were committed to passing instead of doing what they did better, running. 114 yards on 14-28 passing is just not good enough. That's only 4.1 yards per pass, which is not going to win you very many games. We will get to this in a minute but the running game was much more effective and averaged more yards per play.
3. Rushing Game: B+
As a team the Wildcats rushed 45 times for 170 yards which is only 3.8 yards per attempt. I'm sure you're thinking, didn't you say that it was more effective than the passing game, and it is. For if you take out the Vandagriff rushes which were 13 rushes for 26 yards, you can see how effective the runningbacks actually were. They averaged 4.5 yards a carry with 144 total rushing yards. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye was two yards shy from 100 rushing yards on the day. He was awesome against a defensive line that is pretty lauded.
