Kentucky fans not happy with Ole Miss ‘fake’ injury gamesmanship
By Mark Knight
Ole Miss was caught on camera faking an injury, and Kentucky fans are frustrated about the lack of gamesmanship. The referees did not catch it during the game, but the announcers and the ABC booth saw it.
In the second quarter, while Ole Miss was trying to keep a drive alive, Jaxson Dart gestures to running back Matt Jones to fall down and "be injured." It was an embarrassing moment for Ole Miss and something that, while not illegal, is frowned upon and could get a wrist slap from the SEC. See the play for yourself:
You can hear announcer Sean McDonough's dismay at the play and asks the rules analyst if there is a penalty for such a thing. Stewart Mandel tweeted to also thank the announcers for calling these out more.
Kentucky fans took to twitter to also offer their disgust.
It was in a moment where it didn't seem to matter a whole lot for Ole Miss, especially for such a fast-paced offense. What bothers me about it is if they are willing to fake an injury in a moment where it doesn't matter how often do they actually do it. How often do they do it when it could change the momentum or the nature of the game? It will be interesting to see what Kentucky Head Coach Mark Stoops says about it after the game. Or better yet, Ole Miss Head Coach Lane Kiffin.
The Kentucky Wildcats are currently playing on the road in Ole Miss's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. It will be the fourth time that Mark Stoops has taken on the Rebels;he has yet to be able to take them down. This game looks as it if is going to be close as the Kentucky defense has found a way to slow down the Ole Miss offense and limit them to seven points in the first half.
