Brock Vandagriff doesn't want to bring his report card vs South Carolina home to dad
The expectations for Kentucky football were understandably high this season. The slow build that head coach Mark Stoops has done in Lexington along with the acquisition of transfer quarterback Brock Vandagriff had Big Blue Nation excited in a big way.
After rolling to an expected 31-0 Week 1 win over Southern Miss, in which Vandagriff threw for 169 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, the Wildcats were ready to open their conference slate at home against South Carolina.
Perhaps Kentucky needed another warmup week, as they were handily dismantled by the Gamecocks 31-6, and Vandagriff was seen more picking himself up off the turf than throwing the ball to his receivers.
How bad was Brock Vandagriff against South Carolina?
Vandagriff's stat line alone isn't really a fair indication of his performance against the Gamecocks, completing only three passes on 10 attempts for 30 yards and one interception, a third quarter pick-six, and five sacks.
You could pile on the Wildcats quarterback, but in truth, it wasn't entirely his fault. The Wildcats' offensive line gave him absolutely no protection. When he wasn't being sacked, he was scrambling and running for his life.
Kentucky couldn't run the ball so the Gamecocks' defensive line just dug in, pinned their ears back, and came hard on every down -- run or pass. The result was a timid, flustered, and ineffective Vandagriff.
We may have seen precisely why Vandagriff couldn't supplant either Stetson Bennett or Carson Beck when he was at Georgia.
While there's lots of blame to be spread around for this putrid offensive show the Wildcats put on the field, the onus falls on Vandagriff to be the guy to figure out how to put a team on his shoulders and go. Great quarterbacks do that, and he is supposed to be just that.
Next for Brock Vandagriff and the Wildcats, a date with No. 1 Georgia
Things may have just gone from bad to worse for both Vandagriff and the Wildcats' offense. The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and their No. 1 ranked defense are coming to Kroger field and that could be even uglier that what was seen against South Carolina.
While Vandagriff is familiar with Georgia, the reverse is also very true, and you'd have to think advantage Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs on that one. They know his tendencies, they know his weaknesses and they have two games worth of actual game tape to look at now.
Let's hope the offensive line actually shows up against this nasty Georgia defense.
