Alex Raynor breaks Kentucky’s field goal streak, chases SEC and NCAA records
By Mark Knight
Kentucky's star kicker, Alex Raynor, was named SEC special teams player of the week after he scored two more field goals against Ole Miss. He has extended his consecutive field goals to 14, which adds two more to the record he set when he set it at 12 against Ohio last weekend. According to the Kentucky Athletics website, "He also owns the UK school record for field goal percentage at .955 (21-of-22)."
The last time that Raynor missed a field goal was on October 28, 2023, when he was asked to take a shot at a 53-yard field goal in the 4th quarter of a tight contest with the Tennessee Volunteers. Kentucky ultimately lost that game 33-27. He hasn't missed since, and it's not like he's taking chip shots in those 14 attempts. In fact, he extended the record to 14 in the last game against Ole Miss with a 48-yard make.
Raynor currently holds the longest active consecutive field goal streak in the country, but how close is he to the all-time mark in the NCAA? What is the SEC streak for consecutive field goals made? How close is he to catching either of these high water marks?
Let's start with the SEC record since it is much more attainable in the short term with a streak of 20 field goals made. Set by Georgia Bulldogs kicker Marshall Morgan in the 2014 season. He set the record of 19 and then 20 in the same game against South Carolina. He would also see the record end in that same game when, on his third attempt, he missed from 44 yards. With that breaking the seal, he would miss one more time that game, having a 2/4 game. That record has stood for ten years, waiting for the next king to take it.
The NCAA record is outlandish in comparison; it was set by Nick Sciba, a kicker from Wake Forest, back in 2018, with 34 consecutive field goals made. The story of how he got there is a bit more iconic as he became famous for not realizing he was supposed to be kicking, rushing on the field, and clanging it off the post. That blunder could have easily defined his career as the spacey kicker who doesn't know when to kick or how to kick. But he went on to nail the subsequent 34 attempts in a row, setting the NCAA record in grand fashion. He would go on to be the best kicker in Wake Forest and ACC history.
Raynor has a ways to go before reaching either of those marks, but he has already proven to be the best Kentucky kicker to ever suit up in the blue and white. His streak is still alive, and he will look to continue it against Vanderbilt on October 12 at 7:45 pm (EST).
