5 biggest NFL draft busts in Kentucky football history

Kentucky won't be producing another first-round pick in 2024, but that also means no Wildcat taken this year will be seen as a big NFL draft bust, which is a bit of a silver-lining.

Tim Couch was fantastic at Kentucky and in 1998 was the SEC Player of the Year after throwing for 4,275 yards and 36 touchdowns with 15 interceptions and completing 72.3% of his passes. He looked like a sure thing, the perfect player to reconstruct a franchise around.

The Cleveland Browns were moved to Baltimore in 1996, but in 1999 returned as an expansion team, the Ravens then, well on their way to Super Bowl contention. The new Browns first draft pick was Couch and it could not have gone worse.

In 1999, as a 22-year-old, Couch was asked to carry a horrible roster which led to a 2-12 record in his starts. Couch threw for 2,447 yards and 15 touchdowns as a rookie, but only completed 55.9% of his throws with 13 interceptions.

Couch dealt with injuries in 2000, his second year in the league, but more than injuries, he could never get over the interception issue. In 2001 and 2002, Couch started 30 total games in which the Browns went 15-15, but he threw 39 interceptions to his 35 touchdowns. After eight starts in 2003, Couch was out of the league.
