Memphis was hit with the injury bug this season in a major way, especially in the backcourt as Ja Morant and Marcus Smart both missed the majority of the season.
Because of that, there is a real need at the backup guard position. While Sheppard isn't a true point guard, he proved this year he can make plays on the ball and be a reliable option getting a team into its offensive sets.
With Smart interchangeable at either guard position as well, having the versatility to put Sheppard on the floor as a floor spacer, or even on the ball in certain scenarious could be a major asset.
The Grizzlies may also need to replace the shooting of Luke Kennard, who is set to become a free agent. Getting a lethal three-point shooter in Sheppard gives them some flexibility if they don't want to spend the money to re-sign Kennard.
If Sheppard slides to 9th, it could be a perfect match.
Injuries were the issue last year, not neccessarily talent. So, adding someone like Sheppard who is a high-IQ and talented player to a relatively talented roster could be the boost they need.
