Otega Oweh has just two regular-season games left in a Kentucky uniform, but he has already ensured his name will live in the record books forever.
While some are looking at the emotional "Senior Day" vibes, the real story of the Vanderbilt win was Oweh’s ascent into the absolute elite of Kentucky's scoring history. By dropping 23 points on the Commodores, Oweh officially recorded his 20th career 20-point game against SEC competition.
Breaking the Reeves standard
This isn't just a minor stat; it’s a 30-year milestone. Oweh has now surpassed Antonio Reeves (19) for the most 20-point performances in SEC play by a Kentucky player since the 1996-97 season.
Surpassing the greats of the last three decades
To put that in perspective, Oweh is now ahead of legends like:
- Keith Bogans (17 games)
- Jamal Murray (16 games)
- Joe Crawford (15 games)
His consistency is even more staggering when you look at the floor. Oweh has scored in double figures in 61 of his 65 games as a Wildcat. In an era of high-transfer turnover, Oweh has provided a bedrock of reliability that Mark Pope has leaned on since day one.
"Everything happens for a reason"
Despite the records, Oweh is staying grounded in the present. Reflecting on his journey from Oklahoma to the pinnacle of the SEC, he’s found a home in the Bluegrass that exceeded his expectations.
“I didn't think it would be this sweet,” Oweh said. “After last year, I feel like everything happens for a reason. This year has definitely just been an amazing ride.”
The mission isn't finished
While the record is set, Oweh isn't ready to talk about his legacy in the past tense. When asked to pick a favorite memory from his historic run, the senior guard made it clear that he’s still hunting for the one that matters most.
“I feel like my favorite moment is still ahead of us,” Oweh said. “So we’re gonna see.”
With the SEC Tournament looming and a record-breaking senior leading the way, BBN is hoping that "favorite moment" involves a shower of confetti in late March.
