Is nothing sacred in college recruitment, anymore? The answer is pretty much unequivocally no; the transfer portal and NIL negotiations have rendered verbal commitments essentially useless until an athlete actually signs, regardless of the specific sport. Now, the former has struck once more, interrupting an offseason hot streak with bad news for Kentucky Baseball.
RHP Oliver Boone, who has been in the wings for the Bat Cats' bullpen since transferring in from California starting with the 2025 season, is now on the move once more. Boone announced on X that he'll spend his senior season out west with the Arizona State Sun Devils, much to the chagrin of a Kentucky fanbase that dealt with an inconsistent bullpen for the entirety of this past season.
Nick Mingione benefitted from a bastion of returning Wildcats in the midst of the 2026 MLB Draft (with one big name still pending), but the good news never lasts forever. Kentucky's pitching rotation has officially suffered a mild blow with the loss of Boone in the mix.

Losing Oliver Boone is a Mild Blow to Kentucky's Bullpen
Boone, after sitting out the 2025 season at Kentucky Proud Park as he recovered from an elbow injury, appeared in 10 games for the Bat Cats in their 2026 campaign. He'd log one start on his way to a 6.35 ERA over just north of 11 innings.
The RHP's biggest (and most unfortunate) claim to relevant fame came at the bitter end of the Wildcats' season. Boone was the pitcher on the mound for Kentucky when the Cats were facing elimination against West Virginia in the Morgantown regional.
With a Super Regional in Lexington on the line, Boone would give up a season-ending balk and two-run home run in a pivotal ninth-inning stretch. He's a good player with a share of competitive experience, but that's the sort of memory that may have some fans shrugging their shoulders at his departure.
And, even with his loss, Kentucky's bullpen remains in workable shape.
Nick Mingione's Workable Bullpen
Coach Mingione has basically rebuilt his pitching unit from the ground up this summer. While transfer Cooper Corkrean was selected at pick No. 539 in the draft by the Kansas City Royals, meaning he's got a call to make, names like Grayson Willoughby and Mason Snyder outline an otherwise solid group.
We've still got plenty of time to go before the season begins again, and no loss is ever really a positive, but Mingione is at least in a solid position to rebound from Boone's (not uncommon) betrayal.
All is fair in love and the transfer portal, I suppose.
