For Kentucky fans that have been tracking recruiting on the college football front, you'll have noticed that "flip season" is in full effect. Teams are stealing committed players on visits weeks, or even months, after their initial word was given to another school. Although, football isn't the only sport impacted here.
With the transfer portal swinging with glee on the baseball front, too, programs are suffering this disloyalty on a daily basis. We can't be mad, though, because Nick Mingione and his Bat Cats just played spoiler in their own thieving efforts.
Per Transfer Portal and Pete Nakos on X, New Mexico pitcher Cooper Corkrean, who had initially committed to Houston, has now flipped and signed on as a Wildcat with Kentucky. You snooze you lose, right?
Well, even if you don't snooze - so much so that you get a guy to campus and secure a commitment - you can still very well lose. In this transfer showdown, the Wildcats outmatched the Cougars on the recruiting trail. As a result, Mingione nets his third pitcher of an exciting portal cycle.
Cooper Corkrean is a Proven Pitcher
Corkrean, a left-handed pitcher who will be entering his senior season with Kentucky, is hot off a solid season that should render him an immediately reliable option for the Cats' bullpen.
With the Lobos last year, Corkrean finished with a 6-2 overall record throughout 59 innings pitched in total, striking out as many batters along the way. He had a 5.49 ERA and, overall, played his way into a desirable status this offseason. The recruiting battle that Kentucky just won is evidence of that.

In addition to his solid statistics, Corkrean brings an invaluable veteran presence to a Bat Cats bunch that suffered with inconsistency this past season, both on the field and in the way of leadership. Reproducing that winning record is one thing, but what he'll bring to this program as a whole speaks volumes to his value.
A Rebuilt Bullpen for Kentucky
After gripes about the Cats' bullpen plagued their sudden, steep downfall last season, Mingione has clearly decided to push the envelope and ensure that the mound isn't a big issue for the Wildcats when his squad takes the field again.
Corkrean joins PJ Craig and Mason Snyder in Kentucky's now essentially rebuilt bullpen. Mingione will have options on a game-by-game basis, as well as depth that won't look like a Cat out of water when they're thrown in during a pinch.
That unit, like the rest of the team, isn't completely polished, but Mingione is off to a hot start in an offseason that could define his tenure in Lexington moving forward.
