In a press conference largely focused on correcting offensive mistakes, Head Coach Mark Stoops made sure to single out one group for their exceptional play: the offensive line. While the skill positions have struggled with consistency, the big men up front earned rave reviews for their physicality and execution against a talented Ole Miss defensive front.
Stoops specifically shouted out two veterans who have transformed their bodies and their level of play.
Jager Burton and Jalen Farmer earn special mention
On center Jager Burton: “Jager’s played the best football since he’s been here these first two games, and that’s great for us and it’s really good for him,” Stoops said. “He’s a guy that cares deeply… he’s playing very good football right now.”
On right guard Jalen Farmer, who served as a team captain: “He’s in the best place since he’s been with us,” Stoops commented. “The way he plays he’s very powerful and he plays with a lot of intensity… I like what I’m seeing out of Jalen.” Stoops also credited Farmer and the staff for the work he’s put in to change his body.
Their performance was reflected in the run game, where Seth McGowan and Dante Dowdell combined for 149 yards. The line provided consistent movement, a significant improvement from previous seasons. The Big Blue Wall has returned.
While the pass protection was tested, Stoops ultimately put the onus on the quarterback to utilize the pocket the line created. For a program looking for foundational strengths to build upon, the strong, cohesive play of the offensive line is a massive silver lining and a critical component for any future offensive success.
