Kentucky fans are already starting to love what Coach Mark Pope has brought to the Wildcats, not only in his approach on the court with a fun and fresh offensive style. But also in his personable style and transparency with the fans.

His team’s scrappy and unselfish play has left fans optimistic, but his engaging personality and genuine care for the fanbase really stand out. For example, after Saturday’s win over Bucknell, Pope even set up a table just to sign autographs, meeting the fans face-to-face and showing his appreciation.

Pope’s press conferences also are quickly becoming fan favorites as well. Known for his thoughtful, direct responses, Pope doesn’t shy away from giving honest assessments of his own team and himself. When asked about the upcoming game against Duke, a major early-season test for his Wildcats, Pope shared a candid look at where the team stands currently: “Yes, we have so much growing to do, and we’ll be a much better product later this season, but I like our guys right now,” he continued, “I think they’re built of the right stuff. I think they’re going to compete every night.” Music to the fan's ears, as we are always ready to cheer on the Cats against the evil empire of the college basketball world.

This sentiment resonates deeply with every fan in the Big Blue Nation, especially as Pope emphasizes how much the players care not only for winning: “Our guys really care. They care about each other, they care about this fanbase, they care about the state,” he said. This level of investment from both the players and Pope is already winning over Kentucky fans disillusioned by the early exits from the NCAA tournament in the last few years.

With a strong commitment to his players and the Kentucky community, Pope has quickly established himself as a coach who’s as dedicated off the court as he is. Kentucky’s season is just starting, but with a coach willing to go the extra mile for his team and fans alike, the Wildcats look to be in good hands.

Kentucky is back on the court against the aforementioned Blue Devils on Tuesday at 9 PM (following the first game of the Champions Classic between Kansas and Michigan State, so the tip can be a bit later).
