Mark Pope's seat hotter than ever at Kentucky thanks to rivals running laps around him

Mark Pope's recruiting up-and-downs were called into the light in the national media, as one analyst claims that his seat's temperature has hit an all-time high.

Mark Pope certainly understands what it means to be the head coach at the University of Kentucky. I, for one, don't believe that he was blowing smoke in his press confernce when he pointed at the row of championship banners hanging from the rafters in Rupp Arena and assured the thousands of fans in attendance that his plan was to add another one.

Although, I also don't believe that the coming season's roster is in shape to do that, and the BBN don't have to be told again that production such as this past year won't cut it in Lexington. It's a difficult time for the Wildcats, exasperated by their rivals succeeding with flying colors in regard to recruiting.

David Cobb, of CBS Sports College Basketball, highlighted Pope's particular struggles on the recruiting trail in an article that pulled no punches regarding the coach's current state, and future, at Kentucky. In short, in Cobb's own words, "Pope will enter his third season on a scalding seat."

Pope's Scalding Seat

The Cardinals and Volunteers now stand at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the 247Sports Transfer Class rankings," said Cobb, "after Tennessee landed a commitment from the No. 8-ranked transfer and scoring machine Juke Harris (Wake Forest) on Monday."

"Kentucky is lagging behind at 13th, which would be fine if it boasted significant returning production or a strong freshman class. It has neither..." Cobb continued.

"Perhaps Pope's clunky offseason would be more tolerable if its rivals and neighbors weren't tearing it up."

In spite of Pope's own successes against Tennessee and, at least compared to Pat Kelsey, in the NCAA Tournament (as Cobb points out), the blue and white have been blown out on the recruiting trail this offseason.

Kentucky Has to Respond

The Tyran Stokes ordeal appears to be the clear hangup, but it's far from an excuse for Kentucky to be in the position they're currently in. Especially with Louisville mounting as mean a team as they have, the BBN may inevitably dread the Cardinals coming to Rupp next season unless Pope responds, and fast.

From this point forward, that's really what the rest of this offseason is about: Response.

The Cats must find a star to fit into the place that was meant for Stokes and, in the same breath, leave little to no money on the table. If Pope's seat truly is warming up, as folks outside the program need to believe, his third year behind the wheel may be make or break.
