Mark Pope mentions that the classic denim uniforms may make a comeback
As a young Wildcat fan growing up, I was glued to the radio every time Kentucky played. Back then, most games were still shown on tape delay after the WKYT news. So, you’d catch me huddled around the kitchen table with my Grandpa, rocking my favorite player’s jersey (Jeff Brassow, of course) while listening to the voice of Cawood Ledford paint the picture of the game as the Wildcats took on whoever it was they were playing that night. There was just something magical about those memories with the family, hearing Ledford announcing the game. We couldn't get to Rupp very much, but he made you feel like you were right there in Lexington.
But you know what we loved as much as the game itself? The uniforms! As a kid, putting on the same jersey as your favorite player made you feel connected like you were part of something bigger. After all, we are all part of the BBN, and those jerseys are a badge of honor.
That’s why, when Mark Pope recently suggested bringing back the denim uniforms as a one-off event, I couldn’t help but think about those times with my Grandpa. It took me straight back to those days around the radio, jersey on, imagining myself out there on the court.
Who remembers 1995, when Kentucky basketball actually wore denim uniforms? It was a bold choice, that's for sure. Fans were divided: You either loved it or hated it. Some still cringe at the mere mention of denim, while others look back with fond nostalgia and are excited about Pope’s idea.
Pope mentioned that it would be in the hands of the Big Blue Nation, so I ask you, what do you think about the denim jersey? Would you be excited to see it back on the court? Or should it remain a relic of the 90s, remembered but not brought back? Go Cats!
