Mark Pope may be pursuing a backup plan overseas in case Malachi Moreno leaves

In the undesirable case that Malachi Moreno stays in the NBA Draft, Mark Pope may already have his eyes on a pivot option for Kentucky.

Death, taxes, and NBA Draft decisions. These are the nonnegotiables in the life of every college basketball fan, and the BBN is feeling this in full-force as everyone in the bluegrass state waits around for Malachi Moreno to make his call.

The threat of Moreno actually leaving has never looked more realistic than it does right now, and the result for Kentucky's roster would obviously be panic-worthy. Yet, in the (still not entirely likely) case that Moreno does leave, Mark Pope may already be on the prowl for a proper backup plan.

Per BigBlueDylan, Croatian big Michael Ružić is getting set to announce his commitment sooner rather than later. And while BYU has been seen as the apparent heavy favorite, Kentucky remains involved. Things could get hot with this one if Ružić's decision stretches out to the end of this month and overlaps with Moreno's own draft choice.

We could be in for a hair-splitting ride, BBN. Fasten your seatbelts.

One Way (or Another)

If the rumor holds, Ružić has long been an NBA prospect and could work in Kentucky's lineup, given the right structure. The stretch big shot a 36% clip from range this season in the Liga Endesa; he moves well on both ends of the floor and has a high developmental upside.

His six points and three rebounds per contest don't look as compelling, but he's playing against some of the strongest competition in the world. Professional basketball overseas is a different beast, at least compared to the NCAA.

Dylan cited an international scout, who called Ružić "one of the better available pickups right now," describing him as a "7 footer with a jumper and great mobility, you can play him as a backup 5, or as a starting 4. If you have money left to spend he’s probably one of the best players you can spend it on”

Kentucky already has money to spend, but in the case of a Moreno exit, that number would likely implode.

A Big Blue Bag

Initially, the hypothetical addition or Ružić may offer worries about his fit next to Ousmane N'Diaye, who shares a similar build and skillset, but the Wildcats have already accounted for this.

With more traditional, grit-n-grind bigs like Justin McBride and Franck Kepnang in rotation, Coach Pope would have the tools to account for any given matchup with this carousel of options. Is it better than having Moreno back in his anticipated starting role?

Probably not, but Ružić has all the makings of a prospect who could both translate well to college basketball, and into Pope's offensive system specifically. Even if BYU leads right now, Kentucky could throw a desperate big blue bag at Ružić if the Moreno situation turns south.

That seems like a long shot right now, but so did Moreno even possibly leaving for the draft in the first place. You truly never know what's coming next in the NIL era.
