What a get for the Kentucky Wildcats! While it seemed as though it was leaning in that direction, Mark Pope and his staff got a massive pickup for its 2027 recruiting class. Five-star shooting guard/small forward Ryan Hampton committed to the Wildcats on late Sunday morning. This came right after he made his June 5 official visit to Lexington. He becomes the first Kentucky commit for the 2027 cycle.

On3/Rivals Joe Tipton was all over the news of the 6-foot-6 wing from Rockwall, Texas committing.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Hampton is the No. 4 player out of Florida, the No. 2 small forward in the country, and the No. 10 player in his class. The DME Academy standout out of Daytona Beach, Florida had 27 official offers. He took official visits to North Carolina State and Nebraska back in the early part of March. Once again, all signs were heading in the direction of him picking Kentucky.

In the extended wake of Kentucky landing Milan Momcilovic out of the transfer portal, Pope is on fire!

Ryan Hampton committing to Kentucky gives Mark Pope breathing room

While this still may be so incredibly early into the recruiting process in building up the 2027 class, no doubt about it, this is a massive win for Pope and Kentucky. These are the type of players Kentucky teams of old regularly get. Although the game of college basketball has changed multiple times over in the last decade or so, a blue-blood getting a blue-chippper such as Hampton fits like hand in glove.

To be quite frank, Pope can let out a big exhale with this commitment, especially how arduous and laborious it was only a cycle ago. While getting Momcilovic to come aboard from Iowa State has silenced some of its critics, as well as wrecked in-state rival Louisville's plans, he is only going to be a one-year player for the Wildcats. Hampton is the future for this program. He is a potential tone-setter.

Overall, Pope needs to harness as much positive momentum as he can get his hands on. We know that Kentucky is going to win 20-plus games next season in year three for him in Lexington. However, what will be the line of demarcation this program will be judged upon? One would think that with the addition of Momcilovic, Kentucky will need to get to at least the second weekend of the tournament.

Ultimately, we can only hope that Momcilovic's commitment for 2026-27 and now Hampton's to be part of the 2027 class will set off a chain reaction in Lexington. Pope may be calling the shots at his alma mater, but the athletic department is undergoing some massive changes. If he wants to have staying power at Kentucky, he needs to not only win in recruitment, but he has to win when it counts.

For now, getting Hampton to commit to Kentucky this early in the cycle certainly takes pressure off.
