It wasn't great news.

If you were hoping for an early Christmas miracle regarding the health of the Kentucky basketball roster, Mark Pope just delivered a lump of coal. As the Wildcats prepare for a massive showdown with Gonzaga in Nashville, the injury report reads more like a MAS*H unit than a top-25 roster.

The team is currently down three projected starters. One of them, Jayden Quaintance, has never seen the court this season, leaving a massive hole in the frontcourt. But the immediate concern has been the status of point guard Jaland Lowe and defensive ace Mo Dioubate. Today, Pope provided updates on both, and if you are looking for optimism, you might want to look elsewhere.

The updates on Jaland Lowe and Mo Dioubate are not what fans wanted to hear

Let's start with Jaland Lowe. The dynamic guard originally hurt his shoulder in the Blue-White game but tried to grit through it. He managed to play in two games this season, putting up decent numbers despite clearly not being 100 percent.

Tragedy struck when he reinjured the same shoulder in practice, and he has been sidelined ever since. Pope’s update on him was a mixture of vague hope and frustrating reality. He described Lowe's status as "day-to-day forever," a phrase that is sure to drive fans crazy. Essentially, it is all about pain tolerance until the injury is fully healed, with or without surgery.

"He’s been a little bit on the practice floor, he’s gonna try and practice a little bit today," Pope said. "He did some live stuff yesterday, so he’s kind of working his way back in and we’ll see how that goes. Today we’re gonna let him kind of — you guys can all come and take a shot at it if you want, just roll in. We’re gonna see what happens. I don’t know (about Gonzaga), we’ll see. Don’t know, I’m not sure."

That is hardly a ringing endorsement for his availability on Friday. But the news for Mo Dioubate was even more definitive. The tough-nosed forward injured his ankle against Michigan State and has not played since.

While his shooting from deep has been a struggle (hitting just 11 percent), his toughness and rebounding have been sorely missed. Pope confirmed he is dealing with a serious high-ankle sprain.

"He’s got a high-ankle sprain. He’s doing good, won’t be available tomorrow. There’s a chance maybe next week, we’ll see," Pope said. "These things sometimes can be weeks and weeks and weeks, so he’s doing everything he can to get back. It’s just, these high-ankle sprains are super painful, and it’s, without getting too specific, it’s just a torn ligament between the tibia and fibula. It’s just whatever, you know?"

So, to recap: Dioubate is officially out, Lowe is a massive question mark, and Quaintance is still a ghost for now. That means Kentucky will likely be shorthanded yet again in a game they desperately need to win to recapture some momentum heading toward Christmas.

Who is going to step up and help the Cats get their first real victory of the season?
