Mark Pope just surprised the Big Blue Nation with an invite to Kentucky's last practice

Mark Pope has made a habit out of keeping the Big Blue Nation on their toes, but today's midsummer surprise may rank at the top of his list. In a clip reposted by Maggie Davis on X, Coach Pope went live on social media to invite the first 100 fans at Rupp Arena into Kentucky's final practice of the summer.

"If anybody wants to sneak in," Pope said cheekily," I'll show you where the door is." It wasn't long after that video that UK Sports Network filmed people starting to line up to get an inside look at their 2026-27 Wildcats. Unquestionably, Cats fans are going to show out every time for something like this.

Similarly, for all of Mark Pope's arguable faults, he's been perhaps the most involved Kentucky coach in the history of this storied program. Buying ice cream for a few hundred fans after a home game was outlandish enough, but allowing fans to get an in-person look at a Thursday afternoon practice is some next-level love.

As the BBN began to pour in, the stage is now set for both the Cats' ultimate summer run, as well as for the team's infamous winner's board to crown a champion. Let's soak in our last look at this team until the fall, Kentucky fans.

Kentucky is About to Crown a Champion on the Winner's Board

The winner's board has become a noteworthy element of Kentucky's offseason. Coach Pope has consistently provided inside looks at what is essentially a metric that tracks winning plays in practice. Just last week, Pope posted the three names leading the way heading into summer's final stretch.

Then, Zoom Diallo, Jerone Morton, and Malachi Moreno led the way with 48 "wins" a piece. Heading into today's practice, Pope posted an update on X. Moreno and Morton have pulled ahead with 55, while Diallo sits back at 53. Milan Momcilovic has snuck up to the 52 mark as well, meaning we may have a hair-splitter on our hands for the finale today.

At the end of the day, the winner's board is little more than a light-hearted way to track Kentucky's leaders up to this point. It's compelling for fans to see who is making the most effort plays in practice, but beyond that, it's special to have a coach willing to let fans in on a process like this.

Mark Pope's third season in Lexington will be crucial to his tenure going forward; the BBN won't be satisfied with another double-digit loss campaign that ends in a first-round tournament exit.

All the same, Pope continues to win the allegiance of a great many Cats fans by simply being the coolest dude in town. Gestures like this will always have a unique place in the sport, and at least until the season starts, it's difficult not to shrug and smile at who we've got calling the shots right now.
