Kentucky's final roster spot has become a maddening pursuit. As Mark Pope presses on into the 2027 recruiting class, his current team sits with an opening that he's already tried to fill, having unfortunately come up short on two occasions. The result is a program between two tasks, which figures basically every recruit on the Cats' radar as an option for either class.
No such scenario defines this split better than Kentucky's pursuit of five-star point guard Reese Alston. Both Pope and assistant coach Mikhail McLean have scouted him in person this summer, with the former tapping in as recently as last week. Yet as the Wildcats make a push, they'll have to push out the Louisville Cardinals in the process.
Pat Kelsey has long made Alston a priority for Louisville's 2027 class (assuming he doesn't reclassify), constantly appearing court-side for just about all of Alston's games. Kelsey even skipped out on day one of the July evaluations in Las Vegas to catch Alston, which resulted in the guard singing his praises.
Kentucky and Louisville aren't the only schools in the mix (LSU, Houston, and Wichita State also have "warm" interest, per 247Sports), and that aforementioned possibility of a reclass could certainly shake things up for all involved, but you have to like the two Bluegrass schools' chances if Alston remains in his current group.
Because, while he likely wouldn't start for either group this season (given Zoom Diallo and Jackson Shelstad, respectively), the runway could clear for Alston the following season as both teams make him an obvious priority.
An In-State Recruiting Battle for Reese Alston
When it comes to the 2027 pool, the Wildcats have the clear advantage over the Cardinals for the time being. Five-star wing Ryan Hampton defined a strong start for Kentucky's class, while Louisville's four-star forward Ferlandes Wright has them bringing up second in this two-horse race.
We've still got plenty of time, as of now, and a recruitment like Alston's has the potential to swing the momentum dangerously in either direction. At 6-foot-2, 175 lbs, Alston has a nifty dribble package and is an expert at creating his own shots downhill.
He's certainly got NBA upside, but he's the kind of prospect you build a team around for as long as you can. Kentucky's recent recruiting focus on point guards suggests that Pope is looking to make a move here sooner rather than later, intensifying the blue spotlight on Alston.
Kentucky will have to land a visit first (something Louisville did late last year), but look out for Alston's name to pop up more and more as recruiting for 2027 enters high gear.
A chance to beat Louisville, in any capacity, should be taken advantage of. Coach Pope has an opportunity here to bring Kentucky's team, whether current or future, to the tip-top of the national conversation, as well as to get one over on his good buddy Pat Kelsey whilst their on-court record stands still at 1-1.
