Mark Pope calmly silences the insane Yaxel Lendeborg Kentucky rumors that came in

We clearly live in a different era of college athletics. Over the last five years since the dawn of NIL, players getting compensated for their names, images, and likenesses has quickly devolved into effectively pay-for-play. That is not always the case, but it can be just that when it comes to high-end recruitment. Leave it up to Michigan star Yaxel Lendeborg to put Kentucky in some hot water over it.

During an interview with the Associated Press, he said how much Kentucky reportedly offered him.

“They started the number with $7 (million) to $9 (million). They were pretty much going off on the route like we’ll pay him anything to get here.”

Lendeborg said that money was not going to decide where he was going to transfer to from UAB.

“I was raised without it and I went my whole life without it. Anything was going to make me super, super happy at the time."

He finished up by saying that he really wanted to finish his college basketball career at Michigan.

“I was thinking long term. What if I mess up my career because I chased the money instead of a future? Another big reason why I went with Dusty was he didn’t talk about money at all. It was all about making me better and helping me achieve my goals.”

Of course, this led to a rather peculiar response from Kentucky head coach and alumnus Mark Pope.

“There’s nobody more surprised than what the head coach at Kentucky does, than the head coach at Kentucky.”

This word salad from Pope effectively downplays what Lendeborg was alleging to have happened.

Fate would have it that Kentucky is the No. 7 seed in the same Midwest Region as No. 1 Michigan...

Mark Pope tries to dispel the failed Yaxel Lendeborg recruiting efforts

No doubt about it. This is a tricky situation all parties involved will have to navigate. Michigan is one of a few teams that has a great shot of winning March Madness. Much of that has to do with the great play from their star forward in Lendeborg. While Kentucky is every bit the traditional power on the hardwood, this year has been anything but easy for Pope. They will face No. 10 Santa Clara on Friday.

Right now, neither of these teams need this to be a distraction. One would have to wonder why Lendeborg even brought it up in the first place. What does he really have to gain from this? All eyes are on him and the Michigan program after losing in the Big Ten Tournament title bout to Purdue. Lendeborg suffered an ankle injury, but he appears to be in great shape to face No. 16 Howard now.

Overall, Pope needs to do everything in his power to keep this thing on the tracks for Kentucky. Yes, Santa Clara poses a challenging first-round matchup, but if they hold their own on the glass, the Wildcats should be in great shape to advance. However, Kentucky could then face an absolutely brutal matchup in the Round of 32 with No. 2-seeded Iowa State waiting for them. One day at a time...

But in the end, Kentucky could only face Lendeborg's Wolverines in the Elite Eight this postseason.
