Mark Pope calls for more threes: Wildcats deliver in style, with dunks thrown in
By Mark Knight
The Kentucky Wildcats had no issue taking care of business against Jackson State in an overwhelming win, 108-59. The Tigers had no answer for the Wildcats' talent or veracity. Kentucky opened the game by forcing Jackson State into a shot clock violation, and that would be a sign for things to come for the rest of the game. While it wasn't shot clock violations, the Wildcats were relentless on both ends of the floor. It was a very impressive game from the Wildcats.
This week, in his weekly press conference, head coach Mark Pope discussed the team's goal of attempting at least 30 threes in a game. They have only been able to achieve that goal once this year against Bucknell, in which they attempted 36. Tonight against Jackson State, they had 20 by half-time. They finished the game with 39 attempts, and they made 17 of them, which is a 43.6% clip.
While it was an impressive display from behind the arch, the Wildcats mixed in a ton of dunks, too. Highlight reel-style dunks, and it seemed like everyone was getting into the action. Kentucky has only had 13 dunks this entire season; they almost got there tonight in this one game.
This was an entire team effort, with everyone getting involved. This is going to be a consistent theme of this season. 11 different Kentucky Wildcats were able to score points in this one. Here are the final scoring totals and how impressive it was that everyone got involved:
This outpouring of points and threes from Kentucky both set season highs, and it was also a season-high of dunks. Jackson State just had no answer for anything that Kentucky was throwing at them, and for Mark Pope, the Wildcats, and Big Blue Nation, the thought is, on to the next.
