With transfer portal season well underway in the world of college basketball, the Big Blue faithful are especially keen as to the behind the scenes movement in Lexington. Mark Pope, following what was seen by most as a disappointing, 14-loss finish, is working to turn the heat up this time around.
While the five-star Tyran Stokes recruitment continues to play an undeniable part in Kentucky's ongoing vision, the Wildcats' sizable outgoing losses in the portal have created a growing demand for movement in the opposite direction. Coach Pope and Kentucky are officially on the hunt, and for positions one through five, at that.
At guard specifically, in the wake of the departure of Collin Chandler, Jaland Lowe, and Jasper Johnson, the Cats are specifically in need of a scorer. Since before the end of this past season, Westchester Knicks guard Dink Pate had been circled as a favorite target of Pope's to fill that gap. Now though, in a shocking, late-night commitment, the dream of many UK fans is dead.
A Dead Dream
According to Jeff Borzello on X, Pate has pledged his official allegiance to the Providence Friars for the 2026-27 season. The former long-watched potential Wildcat - who Pope had flown to watch just weeks prior - will stay up north for his foray into college basketball.
Having not yet landed a commitment for next year's roster, this can feel like an especially painful loss for Kentucky given their continuous involvement. Pate's scoring prowess, having been tested on a semi-professional level, looks primed to translate to NCAA play.

In his most recent campaign with the New York Knicks G-League affiliate, the guard posted 16 points on average, alongside 6.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest. Assuming he'll be granted a waiver to play in college, Pate is exactly the sort of surefire offensive physicality that any team could use.
Kentucky Has Options
All the same, the shocking nature of Pate's commitment, as well as the Wildcats' apparent lack of a fight therein, may have something to do with the sheer volume of this year's portal class.
In the past, Pope has been criticized for both honing in on a single recruit without a backup plan, and for overpaying for the players he did land; if anything, Pate's loyalty moving in another direction may be an indication that the head coach wasn't ready to succumb to either this time around.
It's a matter of patience for Wildcat fans, in trusting that Pope and his staff have a plan at guard going forward. Although, with highly-touted point guard Zoom Diallo set to take an in-person visit this weekend (reported by Dushawn London and 247Sports), the Big Blue Nation may not have to worry long.
