Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg strolled into a local kindergarten class, ready to wow the little ones with some mayor wisdom. Maybe he’d talk city pride, how to tie your shors, or sharing toys—who knows? But before he could get rolling, one gutsy kid decided to steal the show. With the swagger of a Kentucky Wildcats diehard, this five-year-old flashed the "L’s down" gesture—the ultimate taunt UK fans sling at their Louisville rivals. In one smooth move, a civics chat turned into an epic roast.

The L’s Up, L’s Down Lowdown

If you don’t know the Kentucky-Louisville feud, here’s the deal. Louisville’s got "L’s Up," their hand signal born in 1988, courtesy of two Cardinals freshmen, Everick Sullivan and James “Boo” Brewer. The Athletic dug into it: these high school hotshots joined a stacked U of L squad fresh off a 24-win season and a Sweet 16 run. But instead of starting, they were stuck warming the bench. Not cool for Sullivan and Brewer, who’d been stars back home.

Their big moment hit at the Big Four Classic against Indiana on December 3, 1988. Relegated to the end of the handshake line, Sullivan told Brewer they needed something fresh. “We’re throwing our L’s up,” he said—index finger and thumb out, loud and proud. Brewer backed it: “We walked into gyms as a team with swagger. L’s up was like, Yeah, we’re Louisville.” The fans loved it, and it’s been a Cardinal staple ever since.

Kentucky fans, though? They flipped it—literally. "L’s Down" became their jab, twisting Louisville’s pride into a diss. It’s sharp, it’s petty, and it’s pure Kentucky. No love lost here—just a state split down the middle, blue on one side, red on the other.

The Mayor’s Kindergarten Smackdown

So there’s Greenberg, mid-speech, facing a room of kindergartners. He’s probably expecting “Why do fire trucks beep?” or “Can we have more recess?” Instead, he gets this mini Wildcat, who spots his chance. As the mayor’s talking, the kid throws those L’s down like he’s taunting from the cheap seats at Rupp Arena. Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio caught it on March 20, 2025, and called it, the kid is a rockstar.

Greenberg’s reaction? Gotta figure he laughed it off, maybe a little red-faced. This wasn’t some policy debate—he just got schooled by a kid who can’t even tie his shoes yet, probably.

Rivalry Runs Deep

This isn’t just a cute hiccup—it’s the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry in a nutshell. These two don’t mess around; it’s in the blood. From packed arenas to playground showdowns, it’s Cats versus Cards, every time. And this kid? He’s living proof it starts young. No one coached him—he just knew the move. Somewhere, a UK fan’s toasting him, grinning ear to ear.

Greenberg’s a Louisville man, no doubt, but he’s gotta respect the hustle. A kindergartner dismantling a city’s ego with one hand gesture? That’s not trolling—that’s a masterpiece. In a state obsessed with hoops, this little guy just dropped the mic.

Later on when Louisville was losing to Creighton, Rupp Arena cameras caught a young Wildcat fan in a banana suit. And sure enough, L's down.

Here’s to you, mini Wildcats. You didn’t just flash L’s down—you flipped the script and gave Kentucky fans a tale for the ages. Greenberg walked in the mayor, but you strutted out the champ. Louisville walked in the 8th seed, and walked out without a win. Keep that fire, kids—Kentucky’s got your back.
