The University of Kentucky’s “Lift Them Up” program continues to be one of the best traditions in all of college sports, lifting the spirits of brave patients from Kentucky Children’s Hospital. In week 1, fans were inspired by the story of Molly, and last week Adi Jane. This Saturday, the program will introduce the Big Blue Nation to another special fan.

When the Wildcats take the field against Eastern Michigan, they will be led by four-year-old Tommy Smith, a happy and energetic little boy with an unbreakable spirit.

A special heart for a special boy

Tommy loves football, basketball, and soccer, and he cheers for two teams: the Leslie County Eagles and the Kentucky Wildcats. But behind his infectious smile is the story of a true fighter.

“Tommy is a single ventricle heart patient at Kentucky Children’s. He was born with only half a functioning heart,” said his mom, Ashley Meyers. “He is only four years old and has had three open heart surgeries.”

Despite a journey that has included more challenges than most adults face in a lifetime, Tommy is recovering well from his most recent surgery in July. His mom says the family is "giving God all the praise for it."

Through the "Lift Them Up" program, the family gets a much-deserved break from the routine of hospitals and doctor's appointments. Tommy will get to watch the team practice, have dinner with the players, and on Saturday, he will get his moment in the spotlight.

“Saturday, Tommy gets to be honored. He gets to lead the Cats out on the Cat Walk,” Meyers said.

When asked what he'll be shouting at Kroger Field, Tommy had a simple, perfect message for everyone to hear: "Let's Go UK!"
