The 2025-2026 Kentucky basketball season did not go the way anyone expected. Navigating a highly frustrating 14-loss campaign and a program worst ninth-place finish in the SEC standings tested the patience of everyone in Big Blue Nation.
But despite the regular-season struggles, the Wildcats still managed to author one of the most thrilling moments of the postseason, and that survival just forced a current NBA player to pay up on a high-stakes bet.
Kelenna Azubuike had Brandin Podziemski in a Kentucky jersey.
A hilarious NBA crossover
During the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky was pushed to the absolute brink by the Santa Clara Broncos. It took a miraculous, buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Otega Oweh just to force overtime. But that shot ultimately allowed the Wildcats to escape with a dramatic, season-saving victory. Even if it did all crash down in the next round.
That specific win sent shockwaves all the way to the San Francisco Bay Area, thanks to a wager between Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski and Warriors television broadcaster Kelenna Azubuike.
Azubuike, a beloved former Kentucky basketball standout, naturally backed his Wildcats. Podziemski, who became a first-round NBA draft pick after a stellar collegiate career at Santa Clara, put his faith in his alma mater to pull off the 7-10 upset.
When Oweh’s shot went through the net, and Kentucky survived the overtime period, Podziemski lost the bet. To his credit, he paid his debt in full. The Warriors guard took to social media this week, officially donning a blue and white Kelenna Azubuike Kentucky jersey to honor the wager.
Pregame prep doesn't get better than this!! My alma mater @kentuckymbb beat out Santa Clara, his alma mater, in a first-round NCAA tourney nail-biter! Friendly competition settled, Podz! You're a good sport, good man! #warriors pic.twitter.com/1m1taRwc3m

Gotta love it. A budding NBA star in a Kentucky jersey is always a good thing to see.
A permanent piece of March history
The Wildcats' dramatic victory over Santa Clara didn't just win Azubuike bragging rights in the Golden State locker room; it cemented itself in the annals of college basketball history.

Oweh's heroic shot to force overtime was heavily featured in the iconic "One Shining Moment" montage following Michigan's national championship victory. While the season as a whole did not meet Kentucky's championship-level standards, that specific moment will live on forever. It was a one-of-a-kind moment for a one-of-a-kind player. Otega Oweh will be missed in Lexington. But the resulting image of an NBA rising star begrudgingly wearing Kentucky blue is also pretty awesome. It also serves as a permanent reminder of the sheer reach and cultural impact of not only Kentucky basketball, but Big Blue Nation.
