Kentucky women's basketball is coming. They just finished off a huge win over No. 5 Oklahoma at Historic Memorial Coliseum. This was the first win over a top-5 opponent since 2017. And what is more impressive is how they actually accomplished it.
Kenny Brooks inspires massive comeback against the Sooners
When Kentucky hired Kenny Brooks, the program shifted from a school hoping to compete to a school that was competing. It was clear last year when they were a missed layup away from a Sweet 16 trip in his first year.
Thursday night, they went on the road to Alabama and got absolutely humbled in Tuscaloosa without Teonni Key. Key, who dislocated her elbow in the win against Missouri, will be out at least a few weeks, and someone has to step up in her absence.
Coming off that loss and without one of their most important players, Kentucky opened the game in a funk. The Sooners ran out to a 24-11 lead, and HMC was quiet and not feeling it. But something switched. This team refused to go away, and before you knew it, it was 26-22 and Kentucky was coming.
The Sooners at times looked lost; they committed three straight offensive fouls in a stretch where Kentucky built the lead to five. But again, the Cats would not waver.
Tonie Morgan's calf was as tight as I have ever seen on an athlete who kept playing through it. She never came off the floor, and she was instrumental in the big-time comeback win, finishing with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Clara Strack finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The only other Cat in double figures was Jordan Obi, who had 11 points and scored four straight in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
The Cats knocked off the Sooners 63-57, improving to 3-1 in the SEC.
