Kentucky vs. Georgia odds: Can the Wildcats cover a massive spread in Athens?

The Kentucky Wildcats are walking into a hornet's nest this Saturday. After a deflating 35-13 beatdown in Columbia against South Carolina that felt like the end of the Mark Stoops era, the last thing they needed was a road trip to Athens to face a wounded and furious Georgia Bulldogs team. Georgia is not just coming off a loss; they're coming off the end of an era. Alabama marched into Sanford Stadium last week and snapped the Bulldogs' historic 33-game winning streak with a 24-21 stunner.

Needless to say, Kirby Smart's team will be ravenous for a victory, and Kentucky is the unfortunate team standing in their way, again.

A tale of two moods

Motivation will be a major factor in this SEC clash. Kentucky is trying to right the ship and find some semblance of offensive consistency with a young quarterback. Georgia, on the other hand, is on a mission to prove that their loss to Alabama was a fluke and that they still belong in the College Football Playoff bye conversation. That spells trouble for a Wildcats team still trying to find its identity.

Dissecting the spread and total

The oddsmakers over at FanDuel certainly believe Georgia is ready to make a statement. The Bulldogs opened as a hefty 21.5-point favorite, and while that line has since ticked down slightly to -20.5, it remains a massive spread for a conference game.

It’s a similar line to last year's contest, a game Kentucky managed to keep surprisingly close in a 13-12 defensive slugfest. However, pulling off that kind of magic on the road, against this version of Georgia, will require a monumental effort.

The game's total points line is set at 48.5, with both the over and under sitting at -110 odds. Given Kentucky's offensive struggles and Georgia's elite defense, points could be at a premium, especially for the visiting Wildcats.

Prop bets paint a tough picture for the Cats

If you're looking for signs of a potential Kentucky upset, the prop bets won't offer much hope. The first-half total is set at 25.5 points, suggesting a fairly low-scoring start. More telling are the quarter-by-quarter spreads, which favor Georgia heavily throughout the contest:

  • 1st Quarter: Georgia -6.5
  • 2nd Quarter: Georgia -6
  • 3rd Quarter: Georgia -5.5
  • 4th Quarter: Georgia -4.5

These lines indicate that Vegas expects the Bulldogs to build a lead early and maintain control for all four quarters.

A steep climb for Kentucky

Can Kentucky shock the world and snap a losing streak to Georgia that dates back to 2009? The talent exists on the roster to make things interesting, but climbing this mountain on the road with a developing quarterback and a struggling offensive line is one of the toughest tasks in all of college football. The Wildcats will need to play a near-perfect game to keep it close, lat alone pull off the upset.
