Kentucky's roster woes could break the program's historic AP poll streak

Given the currently arguable outlook of Kentucky's roster, the team could be in for a rude historic awakening at the start of next season.

Things could always be worse for Kentucky than they are right now, but that doesn't make the past few weeks of recruiting (and even general) woes any easier to stomach for the BBN.

Mark Pope just led Kentucky basketball to a 14-loss season, something that has only occurred four times in the entire history of the program. Fans were willing to grant some grace during the initial transition period of Pope's hire, but, to his credit, the coach actually outperformed expectations in his first year Then, he got a crazy amount of NIL money to spend and the matter shortly went south. Now? A bit of the program's ongoing history could be jeopardized as a result.

According to Mark Story, Kentucky has been ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 every year since 1990. Because this transfer portal cycle has not gone according to plan, with numerous top targets choosing to go elsewhere, Kentucky's offseason reload has been slow. If Pope and his staff don't move fast, that more than three-decade streak may be lost.

Risking History

As the national media evaluates the current state of Kentucky's roster, the consensus seems to be "good not great." Remember, the AP poll is run by voters of the news media; if that's the common narrative, it may factor into the Cats' eventual number.

Kentucky's struggles are made worse by programs like Louisville, Tennessee, Duke, and UNC, who are rebuilding their rosters at a much more efficient pace. The offseason is far from over, but it's still fair to say that Kentucky is currently lagging behind

Now, Pope could still land Tyran Stokes, who would change the team's outlook entirely. Kentucky also may be back in the mix for five-star Miikka Muurinen as well; but if both of those guys go elsewhere, the eventual strength of Kentucky's roster will be less clear than ever.

Wins are Wins

This frustration isn't necessarily a complete lack of talent; Kentucky has found spurts of recruiting success. Zoom Diallo has NBA talent if his jump shot can catch up, and Alex Wilkins is a multi-level scorer who could really develop into a collegiate star. Although, "if" is the key word here.

Missing on priority, foundational targets like Donnie Freeman and Rob Wright forced the staff to scramble, and scrambling rarely results in a championship-caliber puzzle for any team. With the national media circling like vultures, Coach Pope is firmly on the clock to deliver a response.

Kentucky's recent addition of Ousmane N'Diaye helped their case, to be fair.

A Worrying Recipe

But you can't sell potential to a fanbase that hasn't been to the Final Four in over a decade, at least not anymore. BBN is exhausted from watching blowout defeats as a result of a disjointed bunch on the hardwood.

This isn't to say that Pope and his staff can't make these pieces fit. If anything, the Cats' coaches likely learned from last year's struggles in that department.

The optics remain rough regardless, even if that's an unfair gauge. With the aforementioned historic streak hanging in the balance, Kentucky has been pushed against a wall with a response demanded in tow.

A ranking means little in actuality, but it's an undeniable metric for a team and program's general status. This would be a stat that Kentucky - fans and staff, both - should be mindful of, in the very least.
