Kentucky’s offense has faced challenge after challenge this season, and quarterback Brock Vandagriff’s struggles have been a focal point for a lot of fans. It could be the line, it could be the playcalling, or it could just be Brock. Brock transferred in from Georgia as a 5-star QB with a pedigree to develop.

We haven't seen that development at all this season. With only limited success in moving the ball and sustaining drives, the Wildcats have been hindered by inconsistent play and stalled drives, including three in a first-and-goal situation from inside the five-yard line. Kentucky’s offense has seen the second-lowest yards per game among SEC teams (Oklahoma), and an inefficient red-zone performance has further compounded the team’s difficulties.

Today, Kentucky offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan (who is under pressure of his own) addressed the need to reassess all aspects of the offense. When questioned directly about Vandagriff’s status as the starter after being replaced by Gavin Wimsatt, Hamdan replied, “Everything is being evaluated,” signaling a potential shift under center. Vandagriff has struggled with accuracy and decision-making, and his completion rate has lagged below SEC averages, leading to third-down inefficiency and turnovers at critical moments.

Kentucky’s lack of offensive consistency has impacted both sides of the ball, placing additional pressure on the defense to hold opponents within reach, as Kentucky has only scored 6 offensive touchdowns in 6 SEC games this year. Hamdan’s evaluation process will likely look to spark change, whether through play-calling adjustments, personnel changes, or a new quarterback. If Wimsatt is inserted, expect a heavy zone read run game with less passing.

As Kentucky moves forward, the team’s next steps are crucial to showing some signs of improvement. Hamdan’s own play-calling issues may be under even more scrutiny if the offense flounders again, especially if they change quarterbacks. Do you think the switch to Wimsatt is the right move?
